The University of Maryland Extension- Montgomery County office is offering an exciting new program starting in January.

This program, Starting a Second Career in Local Food- Commercial Food Production and Marketing for the New Farmer on Small Acreage, is designed to help interested individuals learn how to grow and market vegetable crops. With the increasing need for local food at our farmers markets, and with many wanting to develop an agricultural enterprise this might be just the thing.

Topics will include Marketing; Cover Crops-Planning and Rotation; Soils and Soils Management; Pest Management; Season Extension Technologies; Good Agricultural Practices- Production and Post Harvest Handling; Business Planning; and What Vegetables to Raise- Timing of Crop Planting and What Actually to Raise. Classes will be held at the University of Maryland Extension Office in Derwood Maryland, evenings from 6:00 to 8:45 on the following dates:

January 24 and 30, 2012
February 14, 21, 28, 2012
March 13, and 20, 2012
April 10, 2012
